Members of the Senate Judiciary Committee today reached a bipartisan deal on amendments to legislation (S.744) that would reform America’s high-skilled immigration system. SIA has joined other leading technology associations in sending a letter to members of the Committee in support of the agreement, which was spearheaded by Sens. Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) and Orrin Hatch (R-Utah).https://www.semiconductors.org/clientuploads/innovation.jpg

One of the fundamental drivers of growth and innovation in the U.S. semiconductor industry and across the overall tech sector is the availability of highly educated professionals – from both the U.S. and abroad – to create jobs and develop new technologies. For too long, America’s outdated immigration system has been a barrier to innovation, undermining America’s economic strength and global competitiveness by preventing U.S. companies from recruiting and retaining the world’s best innovators.

The bipartisan compromise reached today by members of the Senate Judiciary Committee marks an important step toward fixing America’s broken high-skilled immigration system. Today’s deal ensures an improved visa system for U.S. companies while also providing important protections for American workers. SIA applauds the progress made by members of the Senate Judiciary Committee on S.744 and we look forward to continuing to work with leaders in Congress as the bill advances through the legislative process.
