SIA and a coalition of 10 other business and tech advocacy groups this week voiced their support for the H-4 Visa Rule, which allows spouses of certain H-1B visa holders to work in the United States. In a letter to Lee Francis Cissna, Director of U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services, the groups urged the Trump Administration to maintain this important program because of its benefits to the American economy.
“Individuals looking to obtain H-4 authorization already legally reside in the United States and are on the path to permanent residency,” the letter states. “They are also eager to work in order to support their families, contribute to their communities by paying taxes, and utilize their skills to help the U.S. economy grow.”
SIA has long advocated for reforming our high-skilled immigration system so the best and brightest minds from around the world can stay in the U.S., create jobs, spur innovation, and drive economic growth. Many of America’s most innovative companies – including several SIA members – were founded and are led by immigrants.
The H-4 rule extends work authorization to a limited subset of spouses of H-1B visa holders who are already seeking employment-based lawful permanent resident (LPR) status – i.e., employment-based green cards. For SIA members, the H-4 rule is important for retaining highly-skilled H-1B employees they have worked hard to recruit, improving their and their families’ quality of life as they wait in unnecessarily long backlogs to obtain a green card.
SIA looks forward to working with leaders in Washington to preserve the H-4 rule and advance high-skilled immigration reforms that will strengthen the U.S. semiconductor industry and our economy.
