How Are Mid-Year Semiconductor Sales Shaping Up?

Posted by Falan Yinug, Director, Industry Statistics and Economic Policy on Jul 26, 2016 4:00:00 PM

Next week, SIA will release its June 2016 global sales report (GSR), which will include global semiconductor sales totals for the first half of 2016. As we approach the halfway point in semiconductor sales for 2016, how should we assess sales performance to date, what questions should we consider ahead of next week’s GSR release, and what should we look for in the second half?

To date, 2016 has been a challenging year for semiconductor sales, and global macroeconomic headwinds continue to hinder sales growth (read Brexit, slowing growth in many major economies, especially China). The table below shows monthly sales, on a three-month-moving average basis, through May (circled in red) compared with monthly sales tracking for the seven previous years. Monthly sales through May have been consistently lower than totals from both 2014 and 2015 through May.

Congressional Research Arm Produces Report on the U.S. Chip Industry

Posted by Falan Yinug, Director, Industry Statistics and Economic Policy on Jul 19, 2016 11:00:00 AM

A newly released report by a non-partisan research arm of Congress underscores how semiconductors’ economic and military importance has made the industry’s health a focus of congressional interest for nearly 70 years. The report, produced by the Congressional Research Service (CRS), details how the federal government played a key role in the creation and support of the U.S. semiconductor industry since World War II, including the co-funding of SEMATECH in the 1980s, as well as support for a wide array of semiconductor research activities. The report also notes Congress’s establishment in July 2015 of the Semiconductor Caucus, a congressional group that seeks to advance policies that support the U.S. semiconductor industry and our economy.

What End-Use Applications Drove Semiconductor Sales in 2015?

Posted by Falan Yinug, Director, Industry Statistics and Economic Policy on Mar 31, 2016 2:00:00 PM

Communications (34.1 percent of total sales) and PCs/computers (29.7 percent) remained the top semiconductor markets by end-use in 2015, according to the recently released World Semiconductor Trade Statistics (WSTS) Semiconductor End-Use Report. The report breaks down sales by end-use and regional end-market for a wide variety of semiconductor products. The figure below shows the six major semiconductor end applications’ share of total semiconductor sales for 2015.

SIA White Paper: Semiconductor Industry Has Contributed More to U.S. Economic Growth than any other Major Manufacturing Industry

Posted by Falan Yinug, Director, Industry Statistics and Economic Policy on Oct 7, 2014 8:00:00 AM

A newly published SIA white paper shows that, thanks to rapid technological development, the U.S. semiconductor industry’s contribution to the U.S. economy grew 265 percent from 1987 to 2011, more than that of any other major U.S. manufacturing industry. Based on official U.S. government data, the paper concludes what SIA and the industry has known for some time: the U.S. semiconductor industry is a uniquely vital contributor to the U.S. economy.

Projected GDP Growth Bodes Well for Semiconductor Sales

Posted by Falan Yinug, Director, Industry Statistics and Economic Policy on May 22, 2014 7:00:00 AM

In its most recent World Economic Outlook published last month, the International Monetary Fund (IMF) forecasts global GDP growth of 3.6 percent in 2014 and 3.9 percent in 2015. Global GDP growth in 2013 was 3.0 percent.

Semiconductor Market Maintains Momentum at Start of 2014

Posted by Falan Yinug, Director, Industry Statistics and Economic Policy on May 14, 2014 8:00:00 AM

As SIA reported earlier this month, worldwide sales of semiconductors reached $78.47 billion during the first quarter of 2014, marking the industry’s highest-ever first quarter sales.  It seems apparent that global semiconductor market performance in early 2014 has continued where 2013 left off with positive sales growth. Through the second half of 2013 and into 2014, the global semiconductor market has demonstrated consistent positive sales momentum, and 2014 global sales are well ahead of last year’s pace through the first quarter by 11.4 percent. As the orange line in the table below clearly illustrates, sales performance from the first three months of 2014 is well ahead of Q1 performance for any of the last five years.
